Application
Ceftriaxone is commonly prescribed for treating a wide range of infections, including:
Lower respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia)
Urinary tract infections
Intra-abdominal infections
Skin and soft tissue infections
Meningitis
Septicemia
Gonorrhea
Its strong resistance to β-lactamase enzymes makes it highly effective in handling antibiotic-resistant bacteria, including Haemophilus influenzae and Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
Contraindications
Ceftriaxone is contraindicated in patients with:
Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins
Neonates with hyperbilirubinemia
Concurrent use with calcium-containing IV solutions in neonates (risk of fatal precipitate formation)
Caution is also advised in patients with renal or hepatic impairment.
Usage and Administration
Ceftriaxone is typically administered by intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) injection. Dosage depends on the infection type, patient age, and overall health condition. Common adult doses range from 1 to 2 grams once daily, or in divided doses for more severe infections. The treatment duration usually spans from 4 to 14 days, based on clinical response.
Other Advantages
Once-daily dosing increases patient compliance
Minimal renal excretion, making it suitable for patients with renal dysfunction
Strong penetration into cerebrospinal fluid, ideal for treating central nervous system infections
